Mattia Bottino is a PhD Candidate in Public Governance, Management and Policy at the University of Bologna - Department of Political and Social Sciences. From 2022 to 2025, he has worked as Researcher at the Institute for Comparative Federalism of Eurac Research.
His doctoral research builds upon the theoretical-conceptual and empirical interrelation among participatory democracy, self-management, and federalism in selected federal or highly decentralized South American states, and on the implications of such interrelation on the institutional-constitutional order of each state.
Over the past few years, he has extensively researched on participatory budgeting in Italy and on local-level participatory democracy in the Alpine region, especially in the Autonomous Provinces of Bolzano/Bozen and Trento. He has also carried out research on territorial autonomy and minority rights in Italy and France, with a special focus on Corsica.
