Keywords: Second generation carbons

Second-generation carbons refer to carbon-rich nanostructures such as biochar, carbon nanotubes, graphene, graphene oxide (GO), fullerene, and carbon nanofibers (CNFs). Our economy produces several carbon-intensive streams such as, for example, agribusiness and oil & gas, and the project aims to demonstrate that special and functionalized carbon-based materials (Second Generation Carbons) containing carbon of biological or fossil origin and mineral components (metals, alkalis, other inorganic components) can be made from such wastes for various applications such as: treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater with recovery of nutrients (P and N) and critical materials (such as B, Mg, Mn), remediation of contaminated soil and water, agricultural soil improvement, carbon sequestration and generation of carbon credits, and production of carbons for super-condensers.
