Current position: permanent associate professor at the Dipartimento
di Scienze Mediche Veterinarie, University of Bologna
.
Educational background: Degree in Veterinary Medicine at
the University of Bologna in 1996 with a thesis on " trace elements
in tissues of Scolopax rusticola, thesis advisor Prof.
Emilio Carpenè; PhD in Cellular and molecular biothecnology at the
University of Bologna in 2002 with a thesis on "genic expression of
metallothionein in marine teleosts", thesis advisor Prof. Emilio
Carpenè; from 2002 to 2009 researcher at Biochemistry Department.
The undersigned is currently participating in the following research projects:
AICS: AID (012590/01/5): “Ecos - Blue economy and coastal ecosystem - Opportunities for sustainable development” as a contact person for the Dimevet group started on 01/07/2022 and taking place in the county of Kilifi, Kenya.
WWF Environmental and Social Impact Assessment Grant: “ Nyuki - Support for small beekeepers in Kilifi Creek to protect biodiversity and ensure an economic income for their livelihood”; as a Dimevet partner and contact person; awaiting evaluation.
37th cycle doctoral project: Innovative approach to evaluate the health status of honey bees and other wild pollinators and counteract their decline (action IV.5 – GREEN); co-tutoring
40th cycle PhD project: Biochemical characterization of dairy industry by-products and their valorisation from a circular economy perspective; proponent.
Agreement with My-Lav veterinary analysis laboratory for the execution of analyzes relating to the determination of the copper concentration in dog liver biopsies.
Scientific production: the research activity carried out by the candidate led to the publication of 59 works in international peer-reviewed journals present in Scopus, with 1188 citations, h-index: 19
Professional Interests: - Trace element
concentrations in tissues of domestic and wild animals. - Protein
identification in serum and urine with ELISA, SDS-PAGE and western
blotting in farmed and small animals. - Study of the urinary proteoma in animals of veterinary interest.
The main research topics which have led to collaboration with national and international research groups are the following: 1) Metabolism of essential and non-essential trace metals (Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb) in different biological matrices. In particular, the extensive collaborations have allowed the application of various techniques for the study of important biomarkers of exposure to metals, such as metallothionein. 2) Study of biomarkers in animals of veterinary interest with possible clinical applications: these studies concerned the analysis of blood-biochemical and urinary parameters and the possible determination of reference intervals in non-conventional animal species, useful for the evaluation of the of health of specimens affected by pathologies 3) Study of the effect of phytoextracts using in vitro and in vivo experimental models: in particular, research was carried out on the anti-inflammatory and immunostimulant activity of different types of Boswellia serrata gum resin extracts both in in vitro and ex-vivo models and in vivo and on the antitumor activity of Artemisia Annua extracts on canine osteosarcoma cell lines.
Teaching experience: - School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Veterinary Medicine: module of "Clinical biochemistry methodologies" (40 hours 2CFU); mudule 2 of " clinical molecular biology" (24 hours)
- School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Animal Biotechnology: module of "Molecular Biology Laboratory" (15 hours)
