Associate professor at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, he carries out his research in the field of Islam. The research interests are directed in particular to the history, doctrines and practices of Sufism (tasawwuf). He is currently studying the works of Shaykh Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami (m. 1021), but the main subject of his research has always been Sufism in the Indian Subcontinent. Engaged in national and international research projects, he collaborates with the Instituto per l'Oriente of Rome and with the Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi Society (MIAS Latina). Author of numerous publications, he has participated as a speaker at numerous conferences on the history of Islam and the doctrines of Sufism.
