Curriculum vitae

Chiara Gius is a research fellow in Sociology of Cultural and Communicative Processes at the Department of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Bologna, where she focuses on gender-based violence, humanitarian and social communication, and media representations of femicide and cyber-violence. 

She is the national coordinator of the PRIN 2022 project "Social Representations of Cyber-Violence Against Women and Girls", which investigates the public discourse on gender-based cyber-violence in Italy. Previously, she participated in national and international research projects, including a PRIN 2015 dedicated to the social representation of femicide. She has conducted research periods at the Centre for Refugee Studies at York University (Canada) and the Department of Italian Studies at the University of Toronto, in addition to academic experiences in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

She has published two monographs, including Epatriate. Storie di donne italiane emigrate in Canada (Carocci, 2023), as well as numerous articles in scientific journals. Her research focuses on gender-based violence in digital media, the role of social platforms in public discourse, and communication strategies for awareness and violence prevention.

She has been a speaker at national and international conferences organized by academic associations. Beyond academia, she has curated the "La Violenza Illustrata" festival, organized by the Casa delle Donne in Bologna, and collaborated with numerous NGOs and institutions.

She graduated with honors in Communication Sciences from the University of Bologna and earned a PhD in Sociology of Communication and Cultural Processes from the University of Padova in 2011. She has obtained the National Scientific Qualification as Associate Professor in the 14/C2 sector.
