Valentino Marini Govigli is Junior assistant professor (fixed term) at the Department of Agri-Food Sciences and Technologies, University of Bologna (Italy). His fields of expertise are socioeconomics of agro-forest goods and services, consumer behaviour and stakeholder preferences, intangible ecosystem services assessment, social innovation brokerage and multi-actor engagement. In his work he makes use of both quantitative and qualitative analysis and techniques.
Valentino has been working with both research and practice, building up a strong professional experience in Mediterranean countries and rural areas in Italy, Greece, and Spain.
Education
Valentino holds a BAE in Economics (2010; University of Genova, Italy), a MRes in Ecology and Environmental Management (2013; University of York, UK), and a PhD in Cultural and Forest Ecology (2020; University of Ioannina, Greece).
Working experience
After few years working as Consultant at the University of Ioannina (Greece), Valentino worked from 2016 until 2021 as Junior Researcher and In-House Consultant at the European Forest Institute (Mediterranean Facility) in Barcelona, Spain. During this work experience he has been involved in several H2020 European projects related to forest economics, forest and agricultural policy, and social innovation.
From April 2021, Valentino works as Junior assistant professor (fixed term) at the Department of Agri-Food Sciences and Technologies, University of Bologna. Since 2025, he is scientific collaborator of AreaEuropa.
Teaching
From 2017, Valentino regularly teaches in the International Master Programme MEDFOR (Mediterranean Forestry and Natural Resources Management) delivering seminars on topics related to forest economics, social innovation, and intangible ecosystem services valuation.
Starting from the 2021-22 Academic year, Valentino teaches Module 2 of the course on Agro-environmental Economics (First cycle degree programme (L) in Land and Agro-Forestry Technologies), as well as Module 2 of the course on Agri-Environmental Policies (Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Planning and management of agro-territorial, forest and landscape).
Research
In his previous work, Valentino was involved in several H2020 research projects, including:

- Evaluation study of the forestry measures under Rural Development. 2017-2018 (DG AGRI)
- VALERIE -Valorizing European Research for Innovation in Agriculture and Forestry 2013-2017 (FP7)
He also contributed to the drafting of numerous H2020 proposals (two of which successfully funded).
He is referee for several international scientific journals related to agroforestry economics, landscape research, and sustainable rural and urban development (Agriculture, Agriculture and Food Security, Ecological Economics, Ecology & Society, Environmental Policy and Governance, Environmental Values, European Countryside, Forest Systems, Landscape Research, New Medit, Qeios, Sustainability, Trees, Forests and People, Urban Climate, Web Ecology).
