Sonia Lucarelli is Professor of International Relations and European Security at the University of Bologna, where she also heads the MoU with NATO’s Allied Command Transformation and oversees the University’s participation in the Europaeum consortium. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Istituto Affari Internazionali and co-coordinates the Italian Standing Group on International Relations. Previously, she sat on the Board of the European International Studies Association (2021–2025), was a Resident Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies, and held a Jean Monnet Fellowship at the European University Institute.
Her research focuses on the EU’s international role and image, European security, and the crisis of the liberal order. She has led numerous projects funded by the EU, NATO, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Volkswagen Stiftung. Her work appears in leading journals such as the Journal of Common Market Studies, International Affairs, and West European Politics. Her latest book, The Handbook of European Union Governance (co-edited with James Sperling), will be published in 2025.
