Associate Professor at the University of Bologna since 2023, he conducts his research in the field of veterinary medicine. His research interests are particularly focused on the ecology of pathogens, i.e. the complex network of interactions between pathogens and the natural environment. He currently focuses his research on topics, such as the management of wild animal populations, also as an ecological function of pathogen population control (including influenza viruses and coronaviruses). He is also involved in supporting a number of conservation projects, also through his medical skills, applied to wildlife.
He is involved in national and international research projects (https://www.lifegreen4blue.eu/) and collaborates with several European and non-EU institutes. He is the author of numerous scientific publications and has received several prizes and awards from prestigious centres and institutes.
