Kleanthis Mantzouranis

Research fellow

Department of Cultural Heritage

Short Bio

I studied Classical Philology in Greece (Athens and Ioannina), and received a PhD in Classics from University College London (UCL) in 2012. I worked as a Teaching Fellow at UCL and Birkbeck College (2012-14), and at the University of St Andrews (2014-18). In the years 2018-23, I was a Research Fellow in the ERC-funded project ‘Honour in Classical Greece’ at the University of Edinburgh. Since February 2024, I am a Research Fellow at the University of Bologna, Department of Cultural Heritage (Ravenna).

My research interests lie in Greek ethical and political thought (especially Aristotle), Greek historiography, and the social and cultural values of archaic and classical Greece. Through the study of Aristotle’s ethical and political philosophy, I became interested in ideas about the virtues, role, and duties of individuals in positions of power and, ultimately, in the notion of leadership in the works of Herodotus and Thucydides.
