The agricultural garden: a multifunctional area dedicated to the agricultural biodiversity
The DISTAL Agricultural Garden, located at the Agriculture Plexus of Bologna in viale Fanin, was established by Count Filippo Re in the early 1800s, when, in Italy, agriculture was becoming science, contributing to the formation of farmers for over two centuries. Even today, its importance does not seem to have diminished, and it provides support to numerous DISTAL courses, as well as contributing to the maintenance of germplasm, to experimentation with new crops and to the conservation of biodiversity in the urban ecosystem. The agricultural garden covers an area of about 3,000 m2 of fertile land, equipped with localized drip irrigation and contains more than 400 plots, each with a different species, cultivated under low input management. As far as possible, the species are grouped according to their use. There are grain, industrial, forage, horticultural, fruit, ornamental crops. A specific sector of the agricultural garden is dedicated to the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants, used in the past in pharmaceutical "opificins" for the preparation of medicines, but which in the broadest sense, also include those for aromatic, cosmetic, coloring, biocidal and functional use. The agricultural garden also promotes educational and dissemination activities targeted at schools of all levels.
