Curriculum vitae

Francesco Baldi is an Associate Professor of Corporate Finance at the Department of Management of the Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna since October 2023. Previously, he was a Senior Assistant (Tenure-Track) Professor of Corporate Finance at the Department of Management of the University of Turin from 2018 to 2021 and Associate Professor of Corporate Finance from 2021 to 2023. Francesco is also Adjunct Professor of Finance at LUISS Guido Carli University since 2009.

Francesco holds a BSc in Business Economics at Sapienza University of Rome, a MSc in Finance at the Sapienza University of Rome, a MSc in Applied Econometrics at the Ezio Vanoni School of Economics and Finance of the Ministry of Treasury, and a PhD in Business Economics at the University of Rome III.

In 2006-2007, Francesco was a Chazen Visiting Scholar at the Division of Finance and Economics of the Columbia Graduate School of Business (NYC, USA) and a Visiting Scholar at the MIT Sloan School of Management (Boston, USA) in his capacity as the recipient of the Fondazione IRI post-doc scholarship in management studies.

He has been the recipient of 3 scholarships (MSc in Finance, PhD in Business Economics, Post-Doc) and of 3 academic awards for his research activity: (1) PriceWaterhouseCoopers Prize for the «Best Junior Contribution to the Development of Intangibles and IC Theory and Practice» (2007); (2) Sinergie «Best Paper Award» for the article «IP Licensing: How to Structure a Good Deal» (2013); (3) Premio Mauro Cicchinè 2013/2014 – Centro Alberto Beneduce (sponsored by Dexia Crediop) for the research project «Credit Funds: Rules, Comparative Analysis of the International Market and Policy Implications for the Development of Project Financing in Italy» (2014). In 2008, Francesco was also the runner-up for The William H. Newman Award (HR Division) for outstanding papers based on recent doctoral dissertations at the Academy of Management Meeting in Los Angeles.

Before joining the University of Turin as a full-time academic, Francesco worked in several organizations having gained an extensive professional experience in the investment banking, corporate finance and applied research areas. He started his career as a treasury dealer in the city of London (1997-1999). He then worked as a senior consultant at Deloitte (1999-2000), an associate in the Debt Capital Markets Division of MCC (Capitalia Group) (2002-2004), a vice president in the Economics Department of Capitalia (2004-2008), a vice president in the Risk Management and Trading Division of ENEL (2008-2009). Next, he worked at the Fondo di Garanzia dei Depositanti del Credito Cooperativo (FGD) (Federcasse) from 2009 to 2018, where he contributed to the development of the risk-based contributions payable by the Italian cooperative banks to the deposit insurance fund and was involved in the restructuring and turnaround of distressed cooperative banks. He was involved in the lobbying activities at the EU institutions concerning the transposition of the Deposit Guarantee Scheme Directive and he was lastly in charge of the Economic Analysis, Model Development and International Relations Unit of FGD.

Francesco is an expert in the valuation of intangible assets, mergers & acquisitions (M&A), company valuation, private equity and debt, sustainable and green finance, ESG rating modeling, real options techniques.

He has designed and taught courses in Corporate Finance, Advanced Corporate Finance, International Finance, Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A).

Francesco has published his research in leading finance and strategy journals, including: Academy of Management Review, Journal of Retailing, Finance Research Letters, Journal of Applied Corporate Finance, Global Finance Journal, Managerial Finance, Technovation, Journal of Intellectual Capital, Journal of Private Equity.

He is in the editorial committee of Economia Italiana and Rivista Bancaria – Minerva Bancaria.

Francesco loves skiing (in the Alps), sailing and going trekking.
