Main research activities
2007-2010 Member of the Italian group collaborating to the EC
founded Project ELBARN - European Livestock Breeds Ark and Rescue
NetEuropean Livestock Breeds Ark and Rescue Net (The objective of
this action is to establish a European Livestock Breeds Ark and
Rescue Net concerned with the
conservation and rescue of Rare Breeds).
From 2001 to 2005 Member of the Italian group collaborating to
the EC founded Project BovMAS – Quantitative Trait Loci Affecting
Milk Production: Mapping and Utilization for Marker Assisted
Selection in Dairy and Dual Purpose Cattle (Project N.
QLRT-2000-02379).
From 1999 to 2000 Member of the Italian group collaborating to
the EC founded Project GenetPig – Identification of genes
controlling economic traits in pig (Project N.
BIO4-CT98-0237).
From 1997 to 1999 Member of the Italian group collaborating to
the EC founded Project INCO COPERNICUS project -Identification and
mapping of candidate genes for carcass and meat quality traits in
pig (Project N. ERBIC15-CT96-0902).
From 1994 to 1996 Member of the Italian group collaborating to
the EC founded Project PiGMaPII (Pig Gene Mapping Project 2) -
identifying trait genes in the pig.
From 1991 to 1993 Member of the Italian group collaborating to
the EC founded Project PiGMaP (Pig Gene Mapping Project) - that
produced the first porcine genetic map.
From 1987 to 2002 he works in research programmes supported by
the Ministry of Scientific Research and by the Emilia-Romagna
Region, focused on carcass end meat quality in pigs and on the
genetic improvement of domestic animals.
From 2010 2017 he was chairman of the national board of
R.A.R.E. (Razze Autoctone a Rischio di Estinzione)
(http://www.associazionerare.it/), that is the first Italian
Association for Endangered Rare Breeds. The mission of R.A.R.E. is
the conservation of local and endangered Italian domestic breeds
for their scientific, cultural, economic and environmental role. It
also promotes educational activities and divulge information on the
numerical status of endangered breeds. R.A.R.E. is associated to
the European SAVE-Foundation (Safeguard for Agricultural Varieties
in Europe") (http://www.save-foundation.net/). Now he is a member of the board of directors of SAVE- Foundation
