Laurea Magistrale (Second cycle degree/Two year Master - 120 ECTS) in Molecular and industrial biotechnology

Specific learning outcomes of the Programme
In compliance with the learning outcomes of class LM-08, the 2nd cycle degree programme in Molecular and Industrial Biotechnologies aims to provide graduates with a strong command of skills used in professional research and the production of goods in different industrial biotechnological sectors linked to chemistry, biochemistry, biomolecular studies, genetics, microbiology and the structure of biological macro-molecules, applying experimental scientific method as a basic approach to biotechnological subjects.
The core learning activities (divided into two macro-learning areas) include the acquisition of:
A. Bio-Molecular Area
- Knowledge of the molecular and cellular bases of different biological systems (eucariotic cells, bacteria, viruses) through core learning activities in biological and molecular subjects;
- Knowledge of bioinformatics needed to support the study of biological macromolecules to build and access databases and practical laboratory work through learning activities in biology subjects;
- Knowledge of the organisation and means of expression of genomes, along with practical genome laboratory work through learning activities in biological subjects;
- Knowledge of life sciences and biomedicine in which biotechnologies find their widest application through core learning activities in biological and vocational subjects;
B. Chemical-Industrial Area
- Knowledge and skills concerning the structure and function of biological macro-molecules and the cellular processes they intervene in, as well as the instrumental and methodological approaches required for biotechnological purposes, through core learning activities in chemical and industrial biochemical subjects;
- Knowledge of chemical engineering and biotechnological industrial systems in order to transfer structural and functional knowledge of biological macromolecules to a systems context for the production of goods and services through learning activities in chemical and engineering subjects;
Elective learning activities target the acquisition of:
- Knowledge of chemistry and biology supporting the study of issues linked to the development and design of biomaterials, industrial biochemistry, production of peptides and similar entities of biological interest, human and molecular genetics, epigenetics, neurobiology, cellular biology, molecular microbiology, statistical analysis of experimental data.
The curriculum is completed with an internship and the final examination, which allows students to put the knowledge, methods and skills acquired during lectures and exercises to practical use in an operational environment.
The dissertation will be based on an original research work in Molecular and Industrial Biotechnology, demonstrating the graduates' full professional autonomy; they will then have access to public and private companies and bodies working in gene expression and genetic engineering, the control of genetic/molecular techniques and the monitoring of genetically modified organisms, the development and production of biosensors and nanosensors, the supervision and quality control of biotechnological systems, molecular diagnosis laboratories, and in the biomedical, environmental and nutritional fields. Their broad knowledge and skills base will allow them to work with commercial organisations and documentation bodies working specifically with biotechnological production. They also possess the learning skills required to continue with post-graduate studies (2nd level Master's programmes, PhD programmes and Specialisation schools).
