Specific Learning outcomes
The post-graduate Master'sdegree programme in Specialized Translation aims to train highly competenttranslators who are able to work in a range of specialist areas: technological,legal, economic, business, medical-pharmacological, ICT, multimedia, andothers. They will possess appropriate terminological and terminographicalexpertise and will have gained experience of the publishing world, as well as athorough background in language and culture. Such competencies are specificallytailored to businesses, associations, and public/private institutions at homeand abroad, and also applicable to teaching and research settings.
Morespecifically, graduates in Specialized Translation will possess the followingskills and competencies:
- a thorough grounding intranslation techniques, including the ability to write and adaptinterlinguistic and intercultural texts to a professional level;
- an in-depth knowledge oflanguages for special purposes and the specialized domains in which they areused, including the multimedia and publishing worlds;
- the ability to use thestate-of-the-art ICT tools of the translator profession, includingonline/offline search tools for the compilation of text corpora, glossariesand terminological databases; theability to use machine translation, computer-assisted translation, and softwarelocalization tools;
- the ability to devise,manage and monitor translation projects where a number of people pool togethertheir linguistic and operative expertise;
- the capacity forcritical thought and self reflection and the awareness of current professionalcodes of conduct;
- ahigh degree of cultural and linguistic competence applied to text and discourseanalysis in the two languages studied.
In line with these goals,the degree programme curriculum is structured around three main areas:
- Language and culture:learning activities focusing on the in-depth study of the language and cultureof the two chosen languages, with a special emphasis placed on textual anddiscourse analysis (24 credits);
- Theory and methodology:learning activities focusing on the study of, and critical reflection on, themain translation theories and methods, and on the acquisition of the requiredprofessional methods and techniques, including research and documentation,terminography, computer-assisted translation, machine translation andlocalization (25 credits);
- Translation practice: for each of the languagesstudied, learning activities in which students acquire the techniques andpractical experience needed to be able to translate and revise texts in avariety of specialized subject areas, including the publishing and multimediasectors (40 credits).
