Laurea (First cycle degree/Bachelor - 180 ECTS) in Biological Sciences

The degree programme in Biological Sciences aims to form graduates with valid basic knowledge of biology and a strong command of scientific investigation methods, as well as a solid grounding for the understanding of scientific and technological progress also to understand and correctly handle living organisms. In detail, graduates will have acquired competences in non-biological sectors including computing, mathematics and statistics, physics, chemistry and the fundamental language competences required to continue studies in the fields of botany, zoology, cytology, histology, comparative anatomy, ecology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, general physiology, microbiology, human biology, plant physiology and hygiene; they will also acquire skills in laboratory management, methods and good practices. Students will perform an internship in a biological research laboratory, analytical or monitoring laboratory or production company working in the biological, biochemical, pharmaceutical or biotechnological field, a health facility or local authority working in the environment or conservation, natural park or reserve, acquiring knowledge of the complex professional world in the biology field and for the first time understanding the relationship between university studies and professional activities, related not only to production but also organisation and management.
The curriculum considers the risk of rapid obsolescence of highly specific competencies inherent in the constant evolution of knowledge in the modern biology field. The degree programme therefore aims to provide students with an appropriate foundation of knowledge and methodology and only in the final stages of the programme are these focused on developing skills in specific subject areas.
The first two years of the programme share a common curriculum, while the third year, with four common course units (human biology, hygiene, plant physiology and laboratory safety), includes two course units chosen from a range of elective courses.
Students therefore have the opportunity to develop their own knowledge and professional skills in different areas of biology, such as cellular and molecular biology, biodiversity and the environment and health biology, supporting their personal choices with specific course units and the internship. This facilitates the students' future choices for continuing studies to 2nd cycle level, where the University of Bologna offers four possibilities: cellular-molecular biology, biodiversity and evolution, marine biology and health biology.
The learning outcomes of the study programme refer to the principles of European harmonisation defining the skills base to be possessed by graduates and complying with the specific requirements of the Dublin Descriptors system and the national Tuning table (CBUI) for class L-13.
