Laurea (First cycle degree/Bachelor - 180 ECTS) in Anthropological Sciences

The general objective is to offer a scientific and vocational education in tune with the problems of multicultural and multi-religious society. On completion of the programme, students will possess in-depth knowledge in demographic-ethnological-anthropological studies pertaining to local and global socio-cultural dynamics, as well as in identity and gender differences. Students will know about the development of anthropological theories and possess the skills needed for comparative analysis of cultures and problems connected to social changes, cultural mediation, and socio-religious pluralism.

They will also have the ability to apply techniques for collecting and processing empirical data, and handle the tools of communication and information management. They will write and speak at least one other European Union language fluently.

The degree programme trains two main professional figures: assistant anthropologist and socio-cultural operator within religious cultures.

The programme provides a general education (history, philosophy, literature and geography) suitable for many branches of teaching. Some of the programme course units analyse the basic anthropological subjects of the modern world, others deal with religious questions within a broad time frame. The course units are taught by scholars who have done direct personal research in the various cultural areas of the world or on the essential features of the ancient and modern religious worlds. The programme foresees a period of training abroad and job-oriented internships with public and private organizations.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

Graduates:

- will have a sound preparation in the ethno-anthropological sciences, from a theoretical and methodological point of view, in direct reference to contemporary problems of interculturalism within European and non-European contexts;

- will possess the main methodological tools of the behavioural sciences (literary, linguistic and philosophical analysis) geared to understanding socio-cultural and religious phenomena.

The above knowledge and understanding will come through attending lectures, workshops, seminars and/or internships, as well as through practical tasks and home study, as prescribed by the Degree Programme Regulations.

Assessment is mainly through exams and/or intermediate tests (oral and/or written exams, tests, oral presentations).

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:

Graduates:

- will know how to analyse religious relations between ethnic groups within a civil community, between religious groups and public institutions; they will be familiar with how religious groups handle issues regarding the family, school, diet, relations between the sexes;

- will know how to organise and classify the tangible and intangible assets of history and culture from an anthropological point of view relevant to religious culture.

The ability to apply such knowledge and understanding will form through critical reading of texts set for home study and prompted by classroom activities.

Assessment is mainly through exams and/or intermediate tests (oral and/or written exams, tests, oral presentations).

MAKING JUDGEMENTS:

Graduates:

- will know how to obtain ethno-anthropological information by proactive listening and observation and will know how to transcribe and organise their findings, using IT instruments;

- will be able to apply the basic analytical categories of anthropology as they analyse how cultures construct reality.

Judgement skills are developed and assessed above all through practical activities, organised seminars, internships, preparation of reports, as well as during the task assigned in preparation of the final exam.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Graduates:

- will be able to understand and communicate on multiple communicative registers typical of various religious contexts, and to relate within mixed work groups;

- will be able to communicate in one other European language (B1 level).

Written and oral communication skills are developed via seminars, workshops and practical tasks and are assessed during each exam.

LEARNING SKILLS:

Graduates will be able to hunt up bibliographical sources (traditional and digital) for anthropological investigations and for their own further education.

The learning abilities acquired are a result of the entire period of study and are assessed continuously throughout the learning period, especially in the home study activities required for each exam, individual and/or group projects and tasks leading to the final exam.
