On completion of studies graduates will have acquired:
knowledge related to foundations of general physiology and pathology;
clinical and phisiopathological knowledge of general medicine;
knowledge relative to the main correlated pictures and relative therapeutical, medical and surgical procedures complementary to the profession of dentistry;
knowledge on the subject of care and assistance based on the pedagogical, psychological and sociological principles;
knowledge in reference to medicines, directly or indirectly related to the practice of dentistry and to the implications of the pharmacological therapy of systemic pathologies;
knowledge relative to the science of biomaterials as far as it pertains to the practice of dentistry;
knowledge relative to the demographic and epidemiological aspects of diseases and their prevention and therapy.
On completion of studies graduates will be able to:
practice dentistry within the context of global treatment of the patient without causing damages to the patient and environment;
identify priorities of interventions consistent with the needs of the population and participating with other subjects in planning interventions aimed at reducing mouth diseases based on the principles and practice of community dentistry;
analyse scientific literature and apply the results of research to therapy in an appropriate manner;
apply the complete range of techniques for controlling anxiety and pains connected to dental therapy (within the limits allowed to dentistry);
control cross infection in order to prevent physical, chemical and microbiological contaminations in exercising the profession;
develop an interdisciplinary type of approach;
elaborate upon the subjects related to the general organisation of work, even through monographic courses and interdisciplinary seminars;
educate the patient pertaining to dental prevention;
supply the patient with adequate information based on knowledge accepted by the scientific community in order to secure informed consent to the therapy;
interpret correctly the legislation regarding the practice of dentistry within the countries of the European Union in which they practice and lend assistance conforming with the legal-medical laws currently enforced in the country in which they practice the profession and the code of ethics;
organise the dental team using all the dental auxiliary personnel available.
The graduates will be able to operate as dentist in the various professional roles and fields.
The professional profile includes having carried-out, during the course of studies, the following clinical practical activities specified by the Advisory Committee On Formation Of Dental Practitioners of the European Union, which must have been carried out by the primary operator, with technical professional autonomy and under the guidance of dentists of university structures.
1. visit, diagnosis and treatment plan:
perform medical and dental case history,
conduct objective exam of the oral cavity,
recognise conditions which are different from normal,
diagnose pathologies of the stomatognathic apparatus,
perform dental radiographic exams through routine techniques and protecting the patient and team from ionizing radiations,
recognise radiological signs deviating from the norm,
formulate a global plan of treatments,
recognise and handle correctly oral manifestations of systemic pathologies or advise the patient to another professional,
evaluate the general health of the patient and modulate a dental treatment plan in relation to a possible systemic pathology,
conduct activities of screening of oral pathologies, including preneoplastic and neoplasia lesions,
diagnose and record oral pathologies and development abnormalities based on classifications approved by the international community,
diagnose and handle the dental, oro-facial and cranium mandibular pain or advise the patient to another suitable professional,
know how to carry out dental implants;
2. specialised therapies:
removal of hard and/or soft deposits from the tooth's surface,
planing root surfaces,
incision, detachment and repositioning of the mucosal flap as part of minor oral surgical interventions,
endodontic treatments on monorooted and multirooted dental elements,
interventions of endodontic surgery,
exodontias,
surgical avulsion of impacted roots and teeth,
rhizectomyand rhizotomy,
excisional and incisional biopsie,
when indicated and appropriate, replacement of missing teeth with fixed and/or removable prosthesis, dental implants and recognising the need to refer patients to another appropriate professional,
conservative restorations of dental elements of the frontal and latero-posterior sections using all materials available and approved by the scientific community,
orthodontic corrections of minor occlusal problems and recognising the need to refer patients to other professionals in the presence of complex pathologies;
3. medical emergencies:
first aid and cardio-pulmonary-resuscitation methods.
The practice of the core clinical activities, which is integrated with other core educational professional clinical activities in university structures for not less than 90 credits, is mandatory and necessary for the obtainment of the 2nd cycle degree; it is planned within the overall duration of the 5-year course of studies. In reference to the definition of the curriculum prearranged for practising the activities provided for by directive 78/687/CEE, the educational regulations of the University conform to the prescriptions of this decree and article 6, paragraph 3 of the Ministerial Decree nr. 509/99.
Graduates of the class must be able to use at least English with reference to disciplinary lexicon, in addition to Italian, appropriately in writing and orally.
