27928 - Laboratory (1) (LM) (G.D)

Academic Year 2024/2025

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Cinema, Television and Multimedia Production (cod. 5899)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the laboratory, the student acquires the fundamentals of some specific aspects of audiovisual and multimedia languages through a program of guided exercises.

Course contents

The laboratory aims to explore the theme of cultural participation by providing a theoretical and empirical toolbox to understand the relationship between cultural organizations, territories, audiences and communities and between cultural participation and social impacts.

Cultural organizations, languages and practices in the audiovisual field will in fact be observed as agents and devices capable of producing a change on a larger scale on a social level and with an impact on the territories in which they operate.

The different nuances and "gradients" and forms of agency of participation will be taken into consideration, from institutionalized to bottom-up practices, community practices and activism, in the audiovisual field.

The Laboratory is developed in three parts that are complementary to each other and not strictly subsequent to each other, rather a constant connection between these parts will be encouraged:

1) A first part is dedicated to providing a conceptual and critical background of the different nuances of cultural participation and to providing analytical tools:

· A critical survey of the concepts of audience development, engagement and cultural participation

· The subjects of participation: the "audiences", the communities

· Practices and methodologies in the field of audience engagement

· The analysis of the social impact of cultural practices and events

· The politics of cultural participation

2) Thematic insights, with the presentation and discussion of cases and the invitation of experts and cultural operators. Particular (but not exclusive) attention will be given to the field of festivals and "micro-festivals", to mediation and "audience training" practices and to bottom-up, community and activism practices in the audiovisual field.

3) Division into groups for case analysis and development of a project work.

Readings/Bibliography

Bibliographic information will be provided at the beginning of the Laboratory and useful materials will be uploaded online for further study of the topics covered in the Workshop and useful for the development of the project work.

Teaching methods

Throughout the course, students will be invited to be an active part in sharing reflections, also from an interdisciplinary perspective.

The case study approach and the development of a project work will be a characterizing element of the Laboratory.

The project work will contain a context analysis, the definition of proposals for the development of audience engagement and participation, by taking in consideration the different forms, practices, devices discussed in the Laboratory, the identification of critical aspects and "open issues" that take into account the different topics addressed in class.

In the first meeting of the Laboratory, indications will be given on how to develop group work.

The laboratory is with a mandatory attendance: it is necessary to attend at least 75% of the lessons

It is necessary to register by writing an email to my attention.

Assessment methods

The evaluation will take into account: the active participation of students in classroom discussion and group activities; the critical and analytical skills developed during the Laboratory; the capacity to connect the main topics addressed in the course; the ability to operationalize concepts and apply methodologies in order to develop project paths in the field of audience engagement and participation.

In different moments of the Laboratory a discussion on the in progress project work will take place, and the last meeting of the Laboratory will be dedicated to the presentation and final discussion of the group work.

Students with SLD or temporary or permanent disabilities. It is necessary to contact the relevant University office (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en) with ample time in advance: the office will propose some adjustments, which must in any case be submitted 15 days in advance to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of these in relation to the teaching objectives.

Teaching tools

From time to time, the ppt slides used in lessons and an anthology of resources to support and integrate the texts in the bibliography will be made available on the virtual platform.
