Learning outcomes
The student will be able to identify the general principles of clinical risk management as applied to the nursing profession. In particular, the student will be able to identify the taxonomy and causes of undesirable events, the main risk management tools and risk areas in nursing, and the responsibilities of the nurse as applied to the management of nursing risks.

1. Introduction to patient safety
- General overview of clinical risk
- Risk management and patient safety evolution and progress
- Epidemiology of clinical risk
2. Clinical risk management tools
- Methodologies for analyzing clinical and care processes
- Hospital risk mapping and assessment
- Incident and near miss event reporting systems: Incident reporting, Ministry of Health Sentinel Event Reporting Information System- SIMES
- Reactive incident analysis tools (Significant event audit-SEA, Root Cause Analysis-RCA)
- Proactive analysis tools (FMEA/FMECA, safety visits, direct observations)

- Communication: cause of adverse events (undesiderable events)
- Action after Adverse Events in Healthcare
