Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide adequate knowledge in the field of reorganization and description of historical archives, with reference to those produced by peripheral state public administrations and preserved in the State Archives. At the end of the course the student will be able to carry out the analysis and reorganization of an archival collection, motivating the methodological choices; will also be able to draw up consistency lists, inventories, and other archival description tools in full compliance with national and international standards and through the use of modern archival description applications.

Course contents

During the course, the tasks that must be carried out in a historical archive will be illustrated with multiple examples (assistance to scholars, reorganization, reconditioning, valorisation). The need to connect these operations with the theoretical foundations of the archival discipline in its various declinations will be demonstrated, also mentioning issues inherent to the current archive, the relationship with the available IT tools and with sector regulations. Each theme will be analyzed starting from real case studies.
