Learning outcomes
The students will learn about the organization of tissues and organs of the human body. This knowledge will allow them to better understand the subsequent Courses of biochemistry, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and clinical pathology.
Course contents
ANATOMY MODULE
1. Histology
epithelial tissues; connective tissues; muscular tissues; nervous tissue.
2.Anatomy
Anatomicomedical terminology
Anatomical position; anatomical planes; terms of relationship and comparison; General organization of hollow and solid organs. Structure of the wall of blood vessels (arteries, capillaries, veins).
Muscoloskeletal system
Joints: General features of the joints; Bones: vertebrae and vertebral column; pelvis; Muscles: Diaphragm.
Cardiovascular system
Gross anatomy of the heart and of its cavities. Structure of the heart wall. The electrical conduction system of the heart.
Respiratory system
Gross anatomy and structure of: pharynx, trachea, lungs, bronchial tree, pulmonary alveoli.
Digestive system
Gross anatomy and structure of: esophagus, stomach, small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum), pancreas (exocrine and endocrine), large intestine, liver, biliary tree and gallbladder.
Urinary system
Gross anatomy of the kidneys, organization of renal vasculature, structure of the nephron (renal corpuscle and renal tubule), juxtaglomerular apparatus.
Female reproductive system
Gross anatomy and structure of: ovary, fallopian tubes, uterus, vagina.
Male reproductive system
Gross anatomy and structure of the testes.
Endocrine system
Gross anatomy and structure of: thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands.
Integumentary system
Epidermis, nails, hair, sebaceous and sweat glands.
Central nervous system
Gross anatomy and structure of : spinal cord and spinal nerves, brain stem (medulla, pons, midbrain), cerebellum, diencephalon (hypothalamus, thalamus), pituitary, telencephalon (cerebral hemispheres, cerebral cortex, basal ganglia)
Autonomic nervous system
Sympathetic, parasympathetic

There will be several teaching aids available on virtuale.unibo.it as pdf files that could be downloaded by using your institutional email address (@studio.unibo.it) and password.
Teaching methods
The course comprises 8 teaching credits (64 hours). During the classes, ppt presentations will be projected to fully illustrate all the topics of the Contents.
Assessment methods
There will be an oral examination with questions (usually 3 questions) related to the topics discussed during the classes. Duration of the exam is approximately 20-25 min. Students will need to register for the Anatomy exam on the Almaesami platform (https://almaesami.unibo.it/almaesami/welcome.htm).
The exam will be considered passed if the student will demonstrate sufficient knowledge in each of the three topics.
