Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student is familiar with the main meta-ethical issues, normative ethical models, and theoretical contributions of cognitive science related to the translatability of moral judgments in computational terms. At the end of the course, the student is able to critically reason about alternative theoretical proposals for algorithmic formulation of ethics, as well as about theories that deny the possibility of computational ethics.
Course contents
The detailed course content corresponds to the list of readings and materials discussed during the lectures and available on Virtuale.
The students will acquire the following competences and skills:
- Overview of the ethical and legal issues of AI
- Understanding the concepts of Ethics of AI, Machine Ethics, Computational Ethics and how they relate to each other and to law
- Analysis of case studies on algorithmic decision-making, AI and discrimination, data protection, manipulation, fairness, and transparency
- A critical approach to the ethical issues of artificial intelligence, machine ethics, and computational ethics
There are no prerequisites for this course. The course is designed for students who have never studied ethics or philosophy.

Teaching methods
Lectures are held by Prof. Lagioia with support of invited collaborators.
Students are warmly invited to actively participate in the lectures and discuss with their peers news and events, related to the topics of the course.
The course also involves discussion groups, where students are expected to prepare arguments based on a paper assigned during the course.
Assessment methods
The exam will consist will be an oral test, consisting of three questions related to the topics of the course.
