from Nov 11, 2024 to Dec 18, 2024
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students achieve advanced awareness of the relevance of the comparative approach to the analysis of European religions and those located in areas between the Near East, East and South Asia, Africa and the Americas; they are able to analyze religious phenomena combining legal studies and social sciences. They acquire the skills to conduct field research by applying techniques of collection, interpretative analysis and processing of empirical data to convey the results obtained.
Course contents
In the first part of the course, the common characteristics and respective sources of the different religious legal systems will be analysed. In the second part, the characteristics and historical evolution of some religious rights (canonical, Jewish, Islamic) will be examined and some particular themes, relevant for the life of the faithful and for their interaction with state legal systems (marriage, divorce, relations between the sexes, religious rules in the social, health and food sectors).
Teaching methods
The course will mainly take place through frontal lessons, aimed at illustrating the principles and concepts inherent to the various topics covered. Materials will then be provided to integrate the manual with the analysis of significant cases and texts, aimed at better understanding the practical problems in the application of religious rights and the context in which they act.
Attendance and active participation are strongly recommended.
Assessment methods
Type of exam: oral (grade out of thirty)
The evaluation criteria are: the correctness of the answers, the ability to argue, synthesize, create connections and comparisons between legal systems, and critically read reality.
