Learning outcomes
At the end of the activity the students: - are able to orient themselves within the current debate on the transformations of contemporary society and its fundamental institutions; - know how to interpret and critically analyze the main and emerging configurations of relations of production and social reproduction; - know how to distinguish and manage the fundamental concepts of social sciences that deal with analyzing the governance of economic processes and public policies.
Course contents
The course aims to analyze the neoliberal phenomenon and the practices of governing subjectivity in light of the most recent economic and social transformations, adopting a seminar-style work method. This issue will be addressed from a transdisciplinary perspective and framed through reflections and arguments aimed at questioning the various criticalities of contemporary capitalism. During the course, an attempt will be made to test the theoretical scope of the main concepts that constitute neoliberal vocabulary and to investigate the emerging phenomena connected to the related legal, economic, and social changes. In particular, our interest will focus on the transformations affecting the spheres of production, labor, welfare, social reproduction, and public policies. The course is structured as a series of meetings with renowned researchers, scholars, and experts on the aforementioned topics. In addition to the seminar sessions themselves, preliminary classroom sessions will introduce and discuss the topics that will be specifically addressed by the invited speakers.
The schedule of seminar meetings for this academic year is still being finalized and will be published alongside the availability of the class timetable. This year's in-depth theme focuses on the relationship between medicalization, subjectivities, and neoliberalism.
Readings/Bibliography
The texts and bibliographies relating to each topic addressed will be indicated and made available to the participants during the course of the meetings. They will be indicated by the guest speakers in preparation for the seminar appointment.
Teaching methods
The course is structured into several complementary phases. The first phase precedes the actual execution of the workshop. In this initial phase, all those interested in contributing to the development of the workshop can participate in its planning and organization. In these preliminary meetings, which are open to students, PhD candidates, research fellows, faculty, and anyone who might be interested, specific topics for in-depth study of neoliberalism will be discussed, including texts to read, speakers to invite, and especially innovative working methods for conducting in-person meetings. The second phase coincides with the start of the workshop activities and involves the analysis, presentation, and discussion in the classroom, with the course instructor, of preparatory bibliographic materials. Finally, in the third phase, experts and researchers in the subject matter that will be the specific focus of the current year will meet in the classroom.
To receive credit, students are required to actively participate in the meetings scheduled in the second and third phases of the workshop.
Assessment methods
The awarding of a qualification is contingent on the actual attendance and active participation of students in the scheduled meetings (at least two-thirds of the meetings), as well as the presentation to the instructor of a project (which can take various forms) that delves into one of the topics discussed in class, agreed upon in advance with the instructor or one of their collaborators.
Teaching tools
The materials to be prepared during the meetings will be provided by the teacher and his collaborators during the meetings. When possible, they will be deposited on the virtual.it portal.
