Course contents

The course examines some key concepts in the sociology of the family and gender studies, with a focus on education, in both family and society at large. Specifically, after introducing the main theoretical perspectives on family, sex, gender, and sexual orientation, the course delves into the following topics: dynamics related to socialization into sexual roles; gender inequality in Italy; the history of feminisms; the social construction of femininity and masculinity in contemporary media; and gender-based violence. These topics are related to the dynamics of the contemporary family, such as: the phases of transitioning to adulthood; fertility and the labor market; family ties; the balance between work and family; and the experience of family life in everyday practice.
