Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student knows the physical bases of radiological, radiotherapeutic and nuclear medicine techniques, with particular attention to risk assessment and limitation for operators and patients.

Course contents

Radiation:

• Ionizing and non-ionizing radiation

• Sources of natural and artificial radiation (in the medical field: X-ray tube, radionuclide production)

• Overview of radiography, CT, PET, radiotherapy

• Radiation-matter interaction

 

Dosimetric and radiation protection quantities:

• Kerma, absorbed dose, equivalent dose, effective dose

• Operational quantities: dose equivalent and dosimeters

• Sources of exposure to ionizing radiation

• Biological effects of radiation

• Radiation protection measures

 

Regulations:

• Legislative Decree 101/2020

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons.

Assessment methods

Learning assessment is carried out through a written exam consisting of 16 multiple-choice questions with 5 answer options each. The final grade will be based on the number of correct answers and will be expressed on a scale from 0 to 30 with honors. A passing grade is achieved with a score of 18 or higher. The use of a standard scientific calculator is allowed, but books, handouts, notes, and internet access are not permitted.
