Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student possesses basic knowledge of the physical characteristics of sound waves and the physiological mechanisms of their transmission and perception;

the student will be able to understands the pathophysiology and the principles of diagnosis and treatment of the main otological diseases that may affect verbal communication.

Course contents

  • Overview of ear embryology
  • Anatomy and physiology of the ear
  • Instrumental diagnostics in audiology
  • Pathology of the outer ear (malformations, inflammation, neoplasms) – diagnostic and therapeutic principles
  • Pathology of the middle ear (inflammatory diseases, otosclerosis, principles of otologic surgery) – diagnostic and therapeutic principles
  • Pathology of the inner ear (cochlea and retrocochlear diseases): malformations, genetic disorders, neuropathies, acoustic neuroma, classifications, diagnostic and therapeutic principles of hearing loss
  • Pathology of the inner ear (posterior labyrinth): malformations, framework of vestibular diseases, differential diagnosis of vertigo, therapeutic principles
