Learning outcomes
The student will learn the pathogenesis of the main neurological diseases and the techniques of the neurological examination, the main diagnostic tools and therapeutic options
Course contents
1. Neurological examination: muscle tone, strength, trophism; deep tendon reflexes, coordination, sensation, abnormal movements, disorders of ambulation, dysphagia, diplopia, dizziness and vertigo, facial paresis, afasia, sphincter disturbances, orthostatic hypotension
2. Laboratory and preclinical exams: EEG, EMG, conduction velocities; lumbar puncture and cerebrospinal fluid exmination
3. Neuromuscular diseases
4. Multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases, including main treatment options
5. Epilepsy and syncope, including main treatment options
6. Parkinson's disease, essential tremor including treatment
7.Movement disorders: chorea, athetosis, including Huntington's disease, vascular chorea and senile chorea
8. Cerebrovascular diseases, treatment options including thrombolysis
9. Dementia: Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, normal pressure hydrocephalus
10. Headache and facial pain
11. Facial palsy, facial hemispasm and myokimia
12. Sleep disorders

Frontal lessons using powerpoint presentations, videos and practical demonstrations whenever possible
Assessment methods
oral examination exploring the knowledge of the etiopathogenesis of the main neurological diseases, their clinical treat neurologic patients especially affected by cognitive deficits and multiple sclerosis. The final score results from the weighted mean of partials. A minimum of 18/30 has to be reached for each partial exam. In detail:
very limited knowledge and ability to analyze only after prompts, correct use of specific terms → 18-19;
limited knowledge and limited ability to analyze issues, correct use of specific terms → 20-24;
Wide knowledge of the subject and ability to analyze issues autonomously and with a very fluent use of specific terms → 25-29;
Very exaustive knowledge of the subject, ability not only to analyze issues but also to make significant connections between different issues, full knowledge of technical language and in depth dissertation and analysis → 30-30L.
