Learning outcomes
The course is focused to several concepts of deviance in the sociological arena, observing how perceptions of deviant behaviors change within society. From a historical-sociological point of view, we are presenting theories upon Beccaria's studies, Lombroso, the Chicago School and the radical theories of social control developed by Gurevitch, follow the feminism and Foucault, to adequately know the theories and methods of the sociology of deviance, centralizing the social changes in the perception of "normality" and "abnormality". Students acquire analytical and critical skills on the main theories and research on the subject of deviance, developing the ability to understand the characteristics of the various models in order to plan appropriate public and social policies.
Course contents
The course begins with the discussion of the major sociological theories about deviance, and then students are going to focus on some topics that are consistent with the curriculum of the degree course:
-Criminology and immigration, the criminalization of migrants, the punishment of migrants
-Gender violence: the paradox of permanent emergency, how violence is defined, violence and gender-symmetry: de-responsibilizing the perpetrators and blaming the victims, feminist perspectives: patriarchy and resistance
-The main premises of the critical criminological view of prison, theoretical developments: the critical analysis of the prison sentence, prison and empirical research: the social organization of prison life, prison abolitionism
-Mafias as a social construction, The limits of dirty economies, State against mafia, emergency, mediatization, repressive measures
-Madness as alienation from reason, drugs as a source of "slavery", drugs, the state of the art, mental health and welfare state
-In what are we talking about when we talk about international crimes, crimes of the powerful, state crimes and crimes against humanity, causes and preliminary notes on genocide, Rafael Lemkin and the definition of the crime of genocide and international law at Nuremberg, from the paradigm of deviance to that of obedience to authority

Teaching methods
The teacher will address students in the classroom lessons using presentation in PPTX, prezi.com, video contents, and statistical data to support the course topics chosen, in addition, students will be invited to a series of open discussions and question times
Assessment methods
The final exam is focused all subjects discussed in classe by one oral exam.
Teaching tools
Finally, the topics of the lessons will be supported by presentations on prezi.com, Power Point and video content selected on YouTube and portals dedicated to the topics of the study course.
