Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student acquires the basic knowledge: i) of the various advanced techniques of non-invasive diagnosis in humans and of the physical principles on which they are based; ii) of the metabolic and biochemical information obtainable from the different types of non-invasive investigation. In particular, the student is able to use biochemical information to understand the mechanisms of metabolic regulation in vivo and knows the procedures of analysis of the in vivo metabolic data.
Course contents
Physical principles of nuclear magnetic resonace spectroscopy (NMR). NMR application in in-vivo biochemistry. Integration between holistic and reductionist approaches. In vivo 31P spectroscopy in human brain and skeletal muscle (31P MRS). In vivo 1H spectroscopy in human brain (1H MRS).
In vivo phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P MRS). Basic principles of bioenergetics metabolism. The study of bioenergetics in vivo in the human brain and skeletal muscle. Examples of diagnostic applications
In vivo proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS).
Meatabolic relevance of the signals detectable in vivo in the human brain. Examples of diagnostic applications
Readings/Bibliography
specific scientific papers and handouts will be given by the teacher
Teaching methods
frontal lessons with several group discussion of specific issue
As concerns the teaching methods of this course unit, all students (including all the international incoming exchange students, i.e. ERASMUS) must attend Module 1, 2 online [https://www.unibo.it/it/servizi-e-opportunita/salute-e-assistenza/salute-e-sicurezza/sicurezza-e-salute-nei-luoghi-di-studio-e-tirocinio], while Module 3 on health and safety is to be attended in class. Information about Module 3 attendance schedule is available on the website of your degree programme ("studiare"--"formazione obbligatoria su sicurezza e salute").
