Learning outcomes
At the end of the workshop the student will be able to collect and organize complex information in a coherent way, and apply critical analysis methods to the linguistic sciences. The student will be able to identify a research issue, relevant to philological research, and possess the knowledge to identify it and appropriately use necessary sources of information in order to address it
Course contents
The course will consist of:
- lessons which are meant to introduce the written translation from Latin into Italian; these lessons will serve as a reinforcement and support, particularly for those students who include Latin courses from the Course programme in their curriculum in order to teach in secondary school; the 'sample texts' will be chosen among those scheduled in such courses.
- lessons shared with the "TraSLA" (Traduzione Specialistica dalle Lingue Antiche) Laboratory that belongs to the Master degree Programme of "Philology, Literature and Classical Tradition"; these lessons will be held by the professor together with Prof. Federico Condello and will deal with the issues of translation from ancient texts and of its various professional targets (school, publishing, divulgation, theatre etc.)
The core of the programme will be tackled in classroom and as homework, which will consist of translation essays from some Latin authors, with collective discussion, led by the professor, of the various translation options employed.
Classes will begin on February 11st, 2024.

Literature and readings about translation studies (and about classical texts which will be translated) will be suggested during the classes.

Teaching methods
Frontal and seminar sessions, in which some issues of translation will be focused, will be followed by others of collective work in the classroom and individual work at home.
For the common part of the TraSLA Laboratory, the two professors will be present together. Prof. Pieri will be present for the other section of the course.
Class attendance is indispensable.
Assessment methods
Like for any other workshop, attendance will be the starting point of the final evaluation. At the end of the course there will be an interview during which the student will discuss with the teacher some of the problematical issues of their translations
The student must send the teacher the corpus of their translations about 15 days before the examination. This will be examined and returned within three days. The teacher will highlight the points that will be discussed in the interview in the paper.
Failure to rework the critical points highlighted will result in an assessment of ineligibility. The assessment of suitability will be made on the basis of a documented reworking of the target text.
