Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will acquire the necessary knowledge to perform practical activities related to the setting up and execution of analysis on propulsion systems.
Course contents
During the laboratory course, the following topics will be covered:
Design of a sounding rocket:
The design of a chemical endoreactor for a sounding rocket will be addressed.
Mission requirements, Delta-V budget, sizing of the convergent-divergent nozzle, sizing of the combustion chamber, contraction ratio, chamber length, injectors, sizing of the propellant tanks, sizing of the pressurization system.
Readings/Bibliography
Hill & Peterson - Mechanics and Thermodynamics of Propulsion - Addison-Wesley Publishing Company - New York
Sutton - Rocket Propulsion - John Wiley & Sons, New York
Teaching methods
The course is structured with lectures and numerical exercises, in which examples of the design and/or analysis of various propulsion systems are presented.
Assessment methods
The student is required to present a report summarizing the results obtained during the activities proposed in the laboratory course.
The actual verification of learning is done through an oral examination in which the teacher asks the student to explain what was reported in certain parts of the report. The student must be able to explain the methodology used to analyze the data and obtain the results reported in the report.
Teaching tools
The course support material will be made available on the online platform Virtuale.
