Learning outcomes
At the end of the Lab, the student is able to: critically approach the proposed theories and methodologies; apply the proposed theoretical constructs to specific educational and healthcare contexts; discuss the risks and opportunities of the practices highlighted in the Lab; notice underlying notions and ideologies in concrete educational events.
Course contents
The lab entitled “Communication and social interaction in daily life: observing, understanding, intervening” focuses on the communicative and interactive processes that characterize daily life experiences. In particular, the lab helps students develop the ability to observe, analyze and consciously manage social interaction in daily, formal and informal, educational contexts, with particular reference to social interaction between parents and children, pupils and teachers, doctors and patients.
After an introduction on communication dynamics and tools for analyzing social interaction, the lab activities are dedicated to the observation, analysis and discussion of video recordings and transcripts of real conversations in everyday educational contexts, in particular in family, school, and medical contexts.
The students will be involved in group works and collaborative activities aimed at understanding the interactive dynamics and educational phenomena that characterize daily communicative exchanges. Particular focus will be placed on the following topics: daily interactions as educational events; the interactive construction of power and knowledge asymmetries; the discursive construction of identities (e.g., parent, child) and institutional roles (e.g., doctor, teacher); interactive alliances and dis-alliances between the participants in interaction (e.g., between parents, teacher and parent, doctor and patient).
The lab is held mainly in Italian but welcomes international students interested in the topics. During the lab, reading materials and interactive modalities will be adapted as to allow students with limited skills in Italian to participate actively.
