32918 - Econometrics Lab

Academic Year 2024/2025

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Economics, Markets and Institutions (cod. 8038)

Learning outcomes

Further improves (besides the related applied econometrics course) the student's ability in using the specialised software, also to better prepare the bachelor thesis.

Course contents

The purpose of the course is to introduce students to applied economics, understood as the descriptive analysis of data and thus as the first step in reading and interpreting a phenomenon.

The course consists mainly of three topics:

First approach to databases, data and different types of measures of economic phenomena. The typical problems that arise in this type of work (choosing the type of data that best describes the phenomenon and their availability) will then be addressed.

Some basics of data analysis will also be introduced. In particular, topics concerning data cleaning and data quality will be covered, both with regard to time series and the case of panel data.

In addition, through simple case studies students will learn the method of introducing and analyzing a topic from an empirical descriptive point of view.

Assessment methods

Taking the classes is a prerequisite for taking the final exam.

In the first two lectures, the list of students who plan to take the course and take the final exam will be collected. This will consist of a short descriptive economic analysis (maximum five slides) on a topic assigned or proposed by the student (or small groups of students) and validated by the lecturer.

The assessment will focus on both the preparation of the analysis and the presentation that each student (small group of students) will make in the classroom
