Teaching methods
In the first three weeks, classes will be focused on grammatical and lexical aspects, using a communicative approach. Students are required to participate actively to reading-listening and speaking-writing activities, both individually and in groups. The last two weeks will be dedicated to group readings, as an introduction to the academic language, to the differences between registers (written and spoken), and to some of the characteristics of the classical language. Constant attendance and active participation are required.
Assessment methods
At the end of the course, both attending and non-attending students will take a two-hour written test which includes: 10 lessons of the textbook; textual comprehension and translation of texts dealt with in class; comprehension of an unknown text (with the aid of a dictionary).
Upon passing their written test, students will be admitted to the 20 minutes oral test, which will focus on:
- discussion of the written test with in-depth grammar and text analysis
- three questions on the text assigned for individual study
For LM students and non-attending students, two texts will be assigned (see bibliography).
A student who attends at least 75% of the course classes is considered an attending student.
During the oral examinations, LM students will also discuss a subject on a topic taken from Chinese Culture, thereby demonstrating that they have independently developed skills for bibliographical research and have dealt with texts by different authors.
Learning assessment. Linguistic competence achieved in reading, translation, and grammatical analysis will be assessed. With reference to theoretical knowledge acquired from individual study, the following will be assessed
- The mastery of content
- The ability to synthesize and analyze themes and concepts
- The ability to express oneself adequately and in language appropriate to the subject matter
Students who show a coherent and complete competence in the topics addressed in class, and are able to use them critically, with maturity of expression and the accurate language register, will be assessed with marks of excellence (27-30)
A mnemonic knowledge of the subject, together with synthesis and analysis skills articulated in a correct but not always appropriate language, will lead to fair marks (22-26).
Formative deficiencies and/or inappropriate language – albeit in the context of minimal knowledge of the examination material – will lead to passing grades (18-21).
Formative deficiencies, inappropriate language, lack of orientation in the bibliographical materials offered during the course will be assessed negatively.
