Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student understands the structural organisation of masonry structures, the laws governing their stability and, through the appropriate modelling of their mechanical behaviour, the criteria and methods with which the necessary repairs can be carried out, instabilities prevented and, more generally, the techniques with which a structural improvement of the construction can be achieved. In particular, at the end of the course the student is able to plan and programme an intervention of consolidation and restoration of a historical building
Course contents
The course aims to provide, on the basis of a historical-critical approach, the essential theoretical and practical skills in the direct analysis of the elements and construction systems of historical buildings (in particular, structural behaviour and phenomena of deterioration and instability), with in-depth study of the monumental heritage, in order to elaborate the consolidation project.
In summary, some of the main activities are listed below:
-analysis of material sources, represented by the buildings themselves, and all other documentary sources;
-reading and diagnosis of the main deterioration and instability phenomena, both from a methodological and operational point of view;
-realization of a speed and detailed survey of static instability phenomena;
-interaction with the Laboratories of the Tecnocontrolli company in Bologna, where a visit and practical exercise are planned for the characterisation of materials and structural components;
-visit to the ‘Classis Ravenna Museo della Città e del Territorio’ museum, with an in-depth study of the technical-constructive aspects of Byzantine monumental construction and a guided tour of the restoration laboratories.

Teaching methods
The course is divided into theoretical and practical lessons, during which the various topics will also be addressed through example cases, exercises and guided visits to construction sites, laboratories and museums where the previously introduced methodologies can be experienced live.
Assessment methods
The examination consists of a preliminary check of the knowledge acquired during the course and, subsequently, a discussion of the papers produced, which will cover:
a. laboratory tests within Tecnocontrolli company laboratories;
b. a ‘graphic’ exercise within the ‘Living in Ravenna’ section of ‘Classis Ravenna Museo della Città e del Territorio’;
c. a ‘structural’ reading of a historical masonry building, with references to the diagnostic and consolidation project.
Teaching tools
Video projector and network connection. Course notes for the main topics of the course. Visits to laboratories, museums and construction sites.
