Learning outcomes

The course provides students with the fundamental heuristic tools for analysing sources and historical experience from a gender perspective. They will have grasped the gender concept as a historiographic category and be broadly familiar with the most recent literature on the subject. They will have acquired self-criticism and an ability to learn from mingling with others; they will also know how to choose the learning tools best suited to their own skills and purposes.

Course contents

The course will deal with the modern and contemporary age starting from the French Revolution and end with the latest action platforms of the international women’s movement. Within this pathway the Long Nineteenth Century and the Victorian model, the birth of the feminist movements, the question of education and that of female labour, the involvement of the totalitarian regimes and the neo-feminism of the nineteen-sixties will be studied.

Lessons 1-3: The foundation of Feminism in the Western world and the beginning of the Contemporary Women's History

Lessons 4-6: Italian and European women and movements since 1860 to IWW

Lessons 7-9: Fascisms and Stalinism; Widerstand and Resistenz; The fascist heritage in Western Europe

Lessons 10-12: The 1970s: the new feminisms and the rights

Lessons 13-15: Women and movements beyond Europe and beyond West

Assessment methods

Assessment of the students’ progress will be performed via the oral exam based on the texts indicated in the bibliography; the aim will be to evaluate the students’ capacity to analyze the historical reality within a gender perspective, recognizing the role of women and the devices of the patriarchal society in the various period of modern and contermporary age.

Accurate knowledge and excellent expositions will be met with high marks. A knowledge that is at times incomplete, uncertain, with a poor critical framing of the questions, accompanied by an exposition that is not wholly relevant, will be met with grades ranging from fair to satisfactory. Lastly, albeit in the presence of some information, a very weak exposition, the absence of a critical framing and an approximate exposition, will be met with a fail mark.
