Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student knows the bio-molecular bases of the control of hormonal secretion and of the growth of endocrine glands. Student also learnes pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and therapy of different diseases, in particular: - diseases characterized by reduced or increased production of hormones or altered hormonal function and endocrine diseases induced by drugs; neoplasms originating from endocrine cells and endocrine paraneoplastic syndromes; male and female gonadal diseases and rare, genetic and/or malformative diseases with endocrine expression; endocrine-metabolic diseases, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, gout, dyslipidemia and arterial hypertension of endocrine origin; diseases of bone mineral metabolism (osteoporosis, hypercalciuria). At the end of the course students are able to critically evaluate specific literature in endocrinological and metabolic fields and to resolve endocrinological clinical cases.
Course contents
The topics of the course will be neuroendocrinology; hyperthyroid states and thyrotoxicosis; hypothyroid states; goiter, benign nodular pathology and thyroid tumors; endogenous and exogenous hypercortisolism; adrenal insufficiency; endocrine hypertension; hyperparathyroidism and hypoparathyroidism; female hyperandrogenisms; male hypogonadism; female hypogonadism; osteoporosis; obesity and metabolic syndrome; hypoglycemia; diabetes; states of severe insulin resistance
