Learning outcomes

The student knows the tools (grammars and dictionaries of various types, corpora of parallel and/or comparable texts) and the main methods (micro- and macro-structuring, editing and proofreading of the target text) of translation, he or she is able to apply them when translating of a variety of texts from Chinese into Italian, even complex ones, he or she is able to identify and apply the most appropriate translation strategies to the communicative/operational functions of the texts.

Course contents

During the course, student will analyze various texts in Chinese, identifying their main features and learning how to apply the most suitable translation strategies. In particular, they will focus on analyzing structures typical of the written language, delving into grammar and learning how to develop effective translation solutions in the target language.

The text to translate will be provided by the teacher in due time through the "Virtuale" platform.

Teaching methods

The course requires mandatory attendance of at least 70% of the classes.

The lectures will encourage student participation in the analysis and translation of the texts covered. Each week the teacher will provide a text that will be analyzed in class in order to identify its salient features. Afterwards, the students will translate in groups the first part of the text, which will then be discussed in class. The translation of the remaining part must be completed individually and sent to the teacher by email. Some of these translations will be corrected in class.

Every student must send all the completed translations to the teacher at least two weeks before taking the exam.

The course will allow the use of paper dictionaries only.


Assessment methods

To take the exam, all students must send all the translations assigned during the course to the teacher at least two weeks in advance.

On taking the exam, the students will be asked to translate a text of approximately 250 words, similar to those covered in the course, in two and a half hours. Students will only be allowed to use paper dictionaries during the exam. The use of electronic devices will not be allowed.

The final grade for the integrated course of Translation between Italian and Chinese II is defined on the average of the marks given in the 2 component tests of the exam itself (one written test for Translation from Chinese into Italian II and one written test for Translation from Italian into Chinese II).

 

Assessment Methods:

30-30 L: excellent evidence demonstrating excellent acquisition of translation techniques, excellent understanding of the Chinese language text, and accuracy in translating into Italian.

27-29: above-average proof, with minor errors or otherwise compensated for by more than sufficient demonstration of the required language knowledge and skills.

24- 26:valid proof, but with some obvious errors denoting partial acquisition of the required knowledge and skills.

21- 23:sufficient evidence but with conspicuous limitations in the knowledge and skills to be acquired.

18- 20: evidence that meets only the minimum criteria of knowledge and skills to be acquired.

insuff.: basic knowledge has not been acquired; the exam should be retaken.
