Learning outcomes

The student - knows the fundamental translation tools (grammars and dictionaries of different types and corpora of parallel and/or comparable texts) and methods (micro- and macro-structuring, editing and proofreading of the target text) - is able to apply them in the translation of a variety of texts, even complex ones, from Italian into German - first language - is able to identify and apply the fundamental translation strategies most appropriate to the communicative/operational functions of the texts to be translated

The course aims at exercising translation strategies on the basis of semi-specialised texts taken from:

Generic websites - description of products/company/exhibitions

Specialised websites - law firm/related services

Editorial/Personal Data Protection Information/Cookie policy on websites

 

Fundamental activities include the analysis of the target group and the drafting of the text with focus on: divergent syntactic structures between Italian and German and idiomatic and technical expressions. With regard to vocabulary, particular attention will be paid to the communicative aspect, i.e. the linguistic and situational context and semantic focus, as well as to the choice between ‘standard’ locutions and the means to add value to the company/product through linguistic choices that differentiate them on the market, with some reference to SEO. By means of a preliminary analysis of the source text and subsequent attempts at paraphrasing, an attempt is made to critically set some strategic elements of the translation process. There is a focus on a functional translation approach, with reference to the specific translation assignments, needs of certain types of readers and users and the analysis of relevant cultural factors.

Teaching methods

Teaching includes a brief analysis of the text and its target, with subsequent regular assignment of translations to be carried out in class and at home, as well as revision exercises of the translations done by fellow students. Students are also expected to be able to independently find and use supporting texts (in both languages) related to the topic or type of text addressed. The translations are then discussed and commented on in the course of the lesson, with constant reference to the principles of a functional and praxis-oriented translation.

Intensively interactive course, with compulsory attendance for at least 70% of the lessons. Participation in the discussion of translation solutions is required.

Assessment methods

There is an in intermediate and a final test. The final exam is aimed at testing the ability to translate short passages compatible with professional assignments into German.

Intermediate test: to check the learning success during the semester, with individual correction; this will take place approximately halfway through the course (translation of a text of approximately 150 words, time available: 1 hour 30 minutes).

Final examination:

Translation from Italian into German of a text concerning one of the subject areas addressed during the course; combined with an analysis of the source text.

Length: approx. 250 words.

Time available: 2.5 hours.

 

The use of online resources is permitted.

The main aspects of the linguistic, stylistic and communicative quality of the texts produced are assessed, together with the level of equivalence and appropriateness achieved.

Correctness: the meaning is correctly reproduced, there are no content errors
Choice of terminology and language register
Grammatical errors (includes among others: syntax, case, gender, number, verb tenses, pre/suffixes)
Completeness/omissions
Style/naturalness and fluency of the text in the target language (sentence length, coherent and fluid rendering of the text in its parts, target usage)
Spelling or punctuation errors

Grades:

30-30L: excellent test demonstrating excellent acquisition of the expected knowledge as well as language rendering skills demonstrating excellent command of the target language.

27-29: above-average, with minor errors or at least compensated for by more than adequate demonstration of the knowledge and skills to be acquired.

24-26: valid test, but with some problems regarding linguistic delivery, completeness of content and handling of the communicative situation.

21-23: sufficient, but with conspicuous limitations in the knowledge and skills to be acquired.

18-20: only meets the minimum criteria of knowledge and skills to be acquired.

insufficient: insufficient proof that does not demonstrate adequate acquisition of the expected knowledge and skills, the examination must be repeated.

PC, Internet/search engines, overhead projector, supporting texts for assigned tasks, online documentation of various kinds, videos, virtual e-learning site.
