Learning outcomes
This course aims at introducing students to the basic principles of statistics. Starting from the fundamental analytical tools of descriptive statistics, the course will focus on the knowledge useful in collecting, ordering, analysing and interpreting the data available on the main socio-economic issues.
At the end of the course the students will also be able to carry out a data analysis through the use of a personal computer.
Course contents
The aim of this introductory course in Statistics is to analyse the tools needed for the quantitative analysis of socio-economic phenomena.
At the end of the course the student will have assimilated those statistical techniques needed for the collection and the analysis of data with also the complement of informatic devices such as personal computer and spreadsheets.
The course will deal with the following topics:
1. The statistical survey
2. The statistical distributions
3. The graphical representations
4. The different types of mean in statistics
5. The measures of variability in statistics
6. The index numbers in statistics
7. The introduction to the analysis of statistical association in statistics
8. The use of software in data processing

The student can choose one of these two textbooks:

Assessment methods
In the exam paper the student will have to show:
- understanding of the techniques of descriptive statistical analysis discussed in the classes and in the exercises.
- capability to apply these techniques to real problems of statistical analysis. The student will have to show that she can master these analytical tools to describe synthetically socio-economic issues. Furthermore, she will have to show her ability to interpret the results obtained with the statistical analysis.
For all the students, the exam paper consists in a set of multiple choice questions.
Assessment of the oral exam
1 limited knowledge of most of the topics discussed in the lectures. Correct use of specialistic language. 18/20
2 Sufficient knowledge of most of the topics analysed in the lectures. Sufficient ability to connect between the various topics. Correct use of specialistic language. 21-24
3 Good knowledge of the topics and good capability to discuss autonomously complex connections. 25-29
4 Outstanding knowledge of the topics and and excellent ability to connect the existing relationships among the various topics
