Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student: - is able to conduct social research on the territory in order to know the social characteristics and social needs in view of a specific intervention - is able to describe the social characteristics of the administrative territories (regions, Provinces, municipalities) using official statistics sources.
Course contents
Descriptive statistics: central tendency measures, dispersion measures
Some basic concepts on probability: elementary properties of probability, probability distributions for discrete variables, binomial distribution
Poisson and normal distribution for continuous variables. Confidence intervals for sample means and proportions
Hypothesis testing: independent sample and paired sample tests.
Analysis of variance.
Correlation, Simple and multiple linear regression and logistic regression.
Chi-square test
Non-parametric tests: Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis.
Population studies and clinical trials
Epidemiological measures: prevalence, incidence
Association measures: absolute risk, relative risk and attributable risk, odds ratio.
Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of diagnostic tests
ROC curve
