Learning outcomes
The student is familiar with the basic notions of German Literature and is able to identify them in specific literary texts. This enables him/her to deepen his/her knowledge and to develop new methodologies related to the interpretation of literary texts.
Course contents
Literature of Migration or The Diversity of the Hybrid
Following the recruitment agreements between the Federal Republic of Germany and other countries in the mid-1950s and the transformation of German society into a globalized and multicultural culture in the last two decades, alongside the socio-economic reality of foreign workers, a literary landscape has been able to establish itself that is now increasingly the focus of public and academic (literary) attention: migrant literature. While in the 1980s the so-called guest worker literature, or the literature of the first generation of migrants, was still perceived (if at all) as a marginal and niche phenomenon, the reception behavior changed abruptly with the second and third generations. In addition to the political and cultural context of guest worker recruitment in the 1950s up to the new immigration and integration regulations of January 2005, the seminar will focus on the literary production of authors such as Franco Biondi, Gino Chiellino, Rafik Schami, Emine Sevgi Özdamar, Feridun Žaimoglu, Yadé Kara, Wladimir Kaminer and others. Also planned is a look at films that deal with the theme of migration, such as Almanya - Willkommen in Deutschland (FRG 2011, directed by Yasemin Şamdereli) or Die Fremde (FRG 2010, directed by Feo Aladağ).

Teaching methods
At the beginning lessons will be teacher-centered and entail lecture sessions and one-way presentations. In a second moment participating students give talks about topics suggested by the teacher or about relevant topics chosen by the students themselves according to their special interest.
Maximum participation of students is stimulated by invitations to debate and opportunities for discussion.
70% of class attendance is required

Assessment methods
The evaluation purpose is to assess the acquisition of the knowledge and skills described above by the student. An oral exam will evaluate the summarizing ability, and the acquisition of the contents of the readings and themes treated during the course.
Teaching tools
In lessons are used not only several types of texts (press releases, newspaper articles, essays) collected and prepared by the teacher but will also be supported by the use of new media technologies (for example audio and/or video podcasts) and powerpoint presentations. All didactic material used during the lessons will be uploaded and made available online on the IOL-platform as pdf- or Mp3-files.
