Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course students will:

- know, on a general level, problems and challenges that music, as science and art, abstract form and potential vehicle of meaning, has placed over its history against the Western philosophical thought;

- develop the lexicon and some specific concepts of the discipline by critically reading important texts.

Course contents

Description

Is there a theoretical foundation to the disciplines of the arts and music (DAMS)? Which is this theoretical foundation? And what does it mean "theoretical foundation"?

An answer to these questions may be founded in Pietro Verri's Discorso sull'indole del piacere e del dolore (1781) (A Discoure on the nature of pleasure and sorrow). About 150 years later, Pietro Verri's reading invite us to place ourselves within the vital core of our artistic disciplines and activities.

Assessment methods

Attending Students(8 weeks out of 10)

The written examination consists of a work called "Quaderno di Filosofia e Estetica Musicale" which records the weekly contents of the lectures, revised and elaborated in the light of the recommended readings. The "Quaderno" includes Presentation, Index of Contents, Contents, Glossary, a Time Line, a Bio-bibliographical note of the mentioned Authors. In evaluating the "Quaderno", it will be considered the linguistic dictation, the logic of argumentation and the observance of all the elements of the work (Presentation, Glossary, Bio-bibliography Note, Argumentation ...). The "Quaderno" shall be submitted to the teacher by the last day of the first month after the end of the course (e.g. by January 31st).

Not-attending students

Non-attending students:

The written examination will be held on the dates of the exams. Students will have 2 hours to answer an open questionnaire of 6 questions (see Didactic Material attached). The first 3 questions (from 0 to 3 points) concern the historical and chronological location of authors and works studied and the definition of specific terms of the discipline (Aesthetics, Music, Pleasure, etc.). In the other 3 questions (0 to 7 points), students are required the expose individual chapters or sections of the recommended exam texts. The final evaluation will be given by the sum of the partial evaluations.

It will be assessed as excellent the performance of those students achieving an organic vision of the course contents, the use of a proper specific language, originality of reflection and familiarity with philosophy and musical aesthetics. It will be assessed as discrete the performance of those students showing mostly mechanical or mnemonic knowledge of the subject, disarticulated synthesis and analysis capabilities, or a correct but not always appropriate language, as well as a scholastic study of philosophy and musical aesthetics. It will be assessed as barely sufficient the performance of those students showing learning gaps, inappropriate language, lack of knowledge of the instruments of philosophy and musical aesthetics. It will be assessed as insufficient the performance of those students showing learning gaps, inappropriate language, no orientation within the recommended bibliography and inability to analyse philosophy and musical aesthetics.
