Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, student knows the models of urban european systems and how they works, in relation to the national and european scale

Course contents

Argument: Urban Modernisation in Europe. East-West confronts.

-Main aspects and times of urban modernisation in Europe, between 19 and 20th. Century.
- Exemples of Capital cities and of important cities: London, Vienna , Paris, Barcellona.
-New cultural models: Artistic Avan-guarde and Modernism in Architecture and Urban Plannig
-Managing of the urban growth:social housing and urban planning.
-The city and the  spaces of Power.
-The socialist city in Eastern Central Europe after 1845
- Urban transition in Capital cities of Central and Eastern Europe after 1989
- Urban changes in the last decades: the urban regeneration
-Cities, Metropoles, Urban Regions:some contemporary challenges

Assessment methods

For students who don’t attend the lessons, an oral examination has required, based on the texts mentioned in the program. It will assess the knowledge and the ability to present the general aspects of the various issues and the necessary specifications, with examples, for present the nature of the issues and their complexity.

Attending st udents, however, can submit a brief written  (maximum 8-10 pages)or oral report, agreed with the teacher and the result of personal insights on some cities or urban issues. A second part of the evaluation will be done through oral examination, where it necessary to demonstrate knowledge and be able to expose the issues developed during classes and in supplementary bibliographical material, indicated by the teacher during class.

The attending students, who do not submit the report, will have a greater load of study for the oral examination.
