Learning outcomes
Students will acquire in-depth knowledge of translation strategies, tecniques, both traditional and advanced tools, and specialized translation methodologies - they will be able to apply them to the English into Italian translation of specialized texts of various kinds in a multimedia format in order to comply with a large variety of specific translation tasks - students will learn how to use the basic tecniques to research, write, edit and revise texts, including the quality assessment of a translated multimedia product - they will also be able to identify and use the translation strategies that are most useful for the communicative functions of the texts to be translated.
Course contents
The multimedia translation module will be structured in two parts which will deal with two fundamental forms of screen translation. The first part will comprise a theoretical and practical introduction to subtitling as well as subtitling exercises. The second part will comprise a theoretical and practical introduction to voice-over as well as voice-over exercises.

In the course of the semester students will be given a detailed bibliography of reference sources. In the meantime, an introduction to the main aspects of subtitling and voice over can be found in the following volumes:

Teaching methods
Practical exercises in class and as home assignments comprising decoding, spotting/timecode, translation and subtling/voice-over exercises. Launch of subtitles. Reading and recording of voiced-over material.
Assessment methods
The final exam is a subtitling or voice over test. Students will choose whether to subtitle or adapt for voice over an English-language clip into Italian. The video will be similar to the genres dealt with in class.
The exam for this module is worth 5 CFUs; the grade for this module will be averaged out with the grade for the module in "traduzione tecnico-scientifica" (5 CFUs).
