Learning outcomes
The student will acquire knowledge of fundamental translation instruments (grammar, various types of dictionaries, parallel and/or similar texts) and methods (micro and macrostructure, preparation and revision/proofreading of target text). He/She must be able to apply these instruments in the translation between Italian and English of a variety of complex texts. Furthermore, they must be able to identify and apply the most appropriate fundamental translation strategies according to the function of the text to be translated.
Course contents
Enhancing translation skills when dealing with semi-technical texts; strengthening expressive and terminology skills in the Italian language; creating glossaries, and using them to translate; drawing on all the tools available to translators such as bilingual dictionaries (both technical and non-technical), reference material (both on paper and electronic)such as parallel and comparable texts, on-line glossaries and databases.
The English-Italian translation course will deal with tourist, commercial and legal texts that were translated as professional assignments from translation agencies. Goals: to train students to deal with the various types of texts they are likely to encounter in a professional setting; to increase their awareness of the resources available on the web, while at the same time enabling them to assess the reliability of the materials found on the web. Students will be required to use the Internet to select relevant comparable texts which will be used as reference material and to build glossaries as aids in the translation process.
Readings/Bibliography
Technical and non-technical monolingual and bilingual dictionaries. Set reading and texts to be translated will be provided at the beginning of the course.
Teaching methods
Lectures; working groups.
Assessment methods
Written exam consisting of the translation from English into Italian of a text similar in terms of subject matter and genre to those translated during the course. During the exam, students will be allowed to use non-specialist monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, as well as the glossaries compiled and the reference material gathered during the course.
