- Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in SPECIALISED TRANSLATION (cod. 8061)
Learning outcomes
The student knows translation strategies, techniques, traditional and advanced tools, as well as specialized translation methods and s/he is able to apply them in the Italian to French translation of different text genres and types falling within the technical and scientific domain, by performing specific translations tasks. S/he knows and is able to use the basic techniques of text documentation, drafting, editing and revision, and can identify and apply the most appropriate advanced translation strategies for the communicative/operative functions of the source texts.
Course contents
The course aims to complement the translation skills the students have already developed with specific skills in the translation of various types of texts falling within the scientific and technical domain. It has the following objectives: (a) to help students reflect on the translator's job (both theoretical and practical aspects will be focused upon); (b) to help students develop tools for the analysis and the adaptation of multimedia texts (considering the constraints of such polysemiotic systems); (c) to encourage the use of CAT tools; (d) to raise students' terminological awareness and promote their autonomy (sources, search and glossaries).
Since the course is a practical one, a number of training exercises will be used to help students develop the kinds of skills they need to carry out a translation and localization process using professional translation tools. The wide range of domains (medicine, ICTs and localization, environment, tourism, and fashion) and of text types (forms, manuals, web pages, transactional emails, products' descriptions in e-commerce websites, advertisements, etc.) aims at providing students with the most comprehensive and flexible preparation.
During the course, the revision of already translated technical and scientific texts will be also focused upon, in order to raise students' awareness of interlinguistic translation problems and to improve their ability to edit the output of both human and machine translation.

The targeted corrections of the teacher along with the continuous discussion with the colleagues will enable the students to improve their abilities, optimize their work and get used to working in a team, by playing some of the roles existing in translation and localization processes.
Assessment methods
Assessment will be by 2 hours written examination. Both the complexity of the source text and the assessment of the target text will depend on the tools made available.
Teaching tools
The lessons with take place in a room equipped with ICT tools and internet connection in order to simulate a professional workspace.
