35167 - Communication Systems: Theory and Measurement M

Academic Year 2014/2015

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Electronic Engineering (cod. 0934)

Learning outcomes

Fundamentals of communication systems design: Signals and systems analysis, modulation/demodulation techniques, transmitters and receivers architectures, channel impairments, non linear effects, link budget. Design criteria and experimental characterization of digital communication systems.

Course contents

The main concepts for the design criteria of analog and digital communication systems are introduced. The fundamentals concerning transmission on bandpass channel in a real environment and basic ideas on multiple access techniques are provided. Finally some application examples such as digital radio links, satellite systems, short range wireless communication   and mobile networks are investigated. Seminars are included in the lectures by inviting experts from Telecommunication industry.
Main topics:
 1.    Telecommunication scenario: the mobile and fixed network
 2.    Baseband digital transmission systems
 3.    Bandpass digital modulation systems with intersymbol interference
 4.    Statistical characterization of bandpass noise
 5.    Tradeoff between spectrum and power efficiency systems for M-QAM
 6.    Link budget for analog and digital bandpass systems
 7.    Transmission quality for analog transmission systems: spectrum and power efficiency
 8.    Mo-demodulation systems performance measurement
 9.    Comparison between different digital modulation systems in the presence of noise
 10.    Non linear effects
 11.    Interference and multipath propagation effects
 12.    Design criteria for fixed and mobile environment
