Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student knows the historical evolution of the mosaic art, the classification of the mosaic typologies, the material and techniques for making mosaics, and the present-day basic criteria for their conservation, taking into account the distinct issues relative to the floor and wall mosaics. Furthermore, the student is in a position to plan a program of preliminary investigations for describing the condition and the characteristics of the materials and structure, in order to indicate the appropriate restoration and maintenance interventions of a mosaic work of art, and knows the methods for documenting each phase of the preservation operations.

Course contents

-      Origin of the mosaic art in the Middle Orient and Greece;

-      The spread of the mosaic to Rome in the Republican Epoch and the first centuries of the Empire;

-      Floor mosaics from Greece and Rome to Byzantine and Medieval epochs;

-      Wall mosaics;

-      Materials of the tesserae: stone, glass, ceramic;

-      Ancient mosaic making techniques;

-      Deterioration of the materials and structures;

-      Methods of study and diagnostics of the materials and their conditions;

-      Products and techniques for the restoration of floor and wall mosaics;

-      Documentation of the mosaic restoration.
